Sun. 9.

When Opening my Bible to begin English service the Constable （Petersen） from the British consulate entered and handed me a letter which was in Mourning. I laid it on the table surmising its contents and Preached on the "Glories of heaven."  ‘Mary in heaven’. Never did heaven before Seem so near, so real. I think I never Spoke with greater power, and God kept up my bleeding heart. After service I opened the letter and read it, then in  tears went into my little room and God heard me. I got ready to preach in Chinese and had conversation and prayer with those who were to the baptized. I preached on Mark 16：16 and as it was announced last sat. The house was packed and the interest much more than on any previous day. After Singing the last hymn and pronouncing the benediction So that the crowd might disperse a little I could hear remarks of various kinds such as "We’ll stop him". Let us beat them". Well, It’s theirs own wish Who cares？ etc.

Baptizing the first five.

The Singing of a hymn filled the house and the street in front and every available spot around. Five came forward and after putting a number of questions to them Which were answered in loud clear tones I immediately baptized them lest there might be interference, then Called on each one to stand up face the crowd and give reasons for their actions.     

In the order above each Spoke pointedly.  Offensive remarks being made their words were Sharper than otherwise they would have been. The last mentioned was nearly blind and the rich Christian experience given was unexpected. The first, （A Hoa as he is called） showed tact and power which were encouraging. In the midst of yells etc. he got up a second time and Spoke Most effectively. At times there it looked as if there would be an attack on us. I spoke last of all and got profound attention. Many going away saying "Its a good affair" etc. etc. An anxious time was gone through and the five went into the room with me there, each thanked God from his heart--. We sang the hymn "I’m not ashamed” etc. together and each went his usual way. After our evening meal and resting awhile we threw opened the front door and sang aloud. the place was soon filled Joe, A Hoa and myself addressed them.
